Multi-layer flooring composition

Laminate wood flooring has a fiberboard core as well as a backing, image, and wear layer. The planks look like popular hardwood species such as oak and maple, while the tiles look like hardwood as well as ceramic and stone. The realistic high-tech wood and tile images are protected from moisture by the backing layer and daily wear and tear by the transparent wear layer.

AC rating for durable floors

It's easy to judge the durability of a laminate plank or tile by noting its AC rating. Each product is subjected to a series of tests. An abrasion coefficient rating is then assigned to the product by an independent entity based on the results of the tests. The flooring must be able to resist burns, stains, scuffs, impact, and moisture. A brand that is rated AC3 is appropriate for high traffic areas in the home.

Standard vs waterproof laminate flooring

Two types of laminate flooring are available: standard and waterproof. While standard laminate is designed to keep water on the surface, water needs to be cleaned up immediately, so it doesn't soak into the fiberboard core. Waterproof laminate repels water for up to 30 hours. Specific guidelines are noted on each product. If planks and tiles remain wet beyond the given timeframe, damage may occur. It's best to clean up the liquid as soon as possible.

Laminate flooring can be installed over some existing flooring and radiant heat systems. Most planks and tiles click and lock together, so no attachment to the subfloor is needed. Instead, the floor floats above the subfloor. Underlayment, or padding, is placed beneath the flooring to even out the subfloor and muffle noise from footsteps. Some brands are designed to be glued to the subfloor. Click/lock flooring tends to sound more hollow than glued-down flooring.
