Luxury vinyl flooring is available in planks (LVP), and tiles (LVT). This 4-layer synthetic flooring has a backing, core, image, and wear layer. The high tech images on planks realistically imitate popular hardwood species while tiles have hardwood, stone, or ceramic looks. Durability is dependent on the wear layer's ability to protect the image, so thicker is better. Look for a brand that has a 20+ mil wear layer. The best brands often offer a coating on top of the wear layer for even more protection against stains, scuffs, and scratches.

While some brands have a unique and innovative core material, most waterproof LVP and LVT have an SPC or a WPC core. A stone plastic composite core contains limestone, while a wood-plastic composite core is composed of wood byproducts. SPC and WPC floor coverings do not change structurally when they are wet, even for extended periods. This rigid core luxury vinyl flooring feels similar underfoot to the natural flooring materials it imitates. However, a WPC core contains a foaming agent, so the flooring is softer than almost indestructible SPC flooring.

Most vinyl plank flooring is installed as a floating floor. Planks click and lock together, so the floor needs no attachment to the subfloor. Padding that is specially designed for use with luxury vinyl is placed under the flooring. This padding smooths out minor imperfections in the subfloor and muffles the sound of footsteps. Some LVT flooring brands click and lock together while others are designed for glue-down installation. Loose lay planks and tiles are also available. This flooring, which uses friction to attach to the subfloor, is best for smaller rooms.
